My paintings are inspired by nature and the relationship of human beings within it. Most of the work in this exhibition draws on time spent on the small island of Barbados in the West Indies. This tropical island was the centre of the slave trade and bore witness to an unprecedented amount of human suffering, It is now a prized possession of the tourist industry and just the very mention of its name alludes to the seductive dream world of an earthly heaven.
My paintings fluctuate between the sharp intensity of colour and light and the soft haze of humidity and heat found in the tropics. They are about the profound touch of human connection, acceptance of “what life is”, the lack of concern about what tomorrow might be, wisdom, and our connection to the earth.
