Vanessa Matthews is a novelist and poet, her debut poetry collection Melodies of My Other Life was published by Winter Goose Publishing in 2013. In 2012 she completed a 30 day writing and blogging challenge, during which she won two poetry contests. In addition to writing, Vanessa has worked as a relationship counsellor, is a mentor for Arts Emergency and a freelance writer, marketing and business consultant. She has penned articles for national media and worked with – and on behalf of – a number of the UK’s biggest blue chip companies.
Vanessa will be reading from, and speaking about her, new novel The Doctor’s Daughter, released in June 2015 and already receiving positive reviews. Set in Vienna in the late 1920s, Vanessa shares what she learned about women in science whilst researching the novel. She will also explain why she chose a historical setting to explore issues such as sexism, mental health, love and loss, and what she learned about feminism in the process.
