Jan Middendorp is a Dutch writer-designer living in Berlin. Unable to write about himself and thus come up with a bonafide first novel, he took to cultural criticism, covering contemporary dance and performance, video and literature. For the last fifteen years or so he has focused on graphic design, working mainly as an editorial designer and an author of books on type design and typography. He is a contributor to Eye Magazine and the MyFonts.com newsletters and website.
Jan will be delivering an entertaining hour lecture on type, design and reading. Apostrophe Now! is a message from the world of type (fonts) and typography, where designers think in black and white, and cringe when they spot an apostrophe that is — the horror! — upside-down. Writers may want to know more about type — the bricks their buildings are built with; and type designers should learn to peek over the edge of their plate of alphabet soup, and get to know the real world. By reading, perhaps?
Jan will also be speaking as part of our panel for the symposium on Radical Publishing for the New Millennium.
